— PAUL AND JUDY ANDREWS WOMEN’S HOSPITAL AT BAYLOR ALL SAINTS

This new four-story facility is nearly 190,000 square feet and offers traditional maternity services, including Fort Worth’s largest level III neonatal intensive care unit. It will expand to include a wide range of specialty services including a comprehensive breast center, gynecologic care, genetic testing services, reproductive medicine and pelvic and urogynecologic care. The Andrews Women’s Hospital also features 24-hour care for obstetrical and gynecological patients with an 8-bed triage unit and a 5-bed area for maternal fetal exams. These units are staffed by a team with experience in prenatal issues and high-risk pregnancies.

— TEXAS HEALTH SPECIALTY HOSPITAL
Texas Health Specialty Hospital opened in 1989 as a hospital licensed for 15 beds on the campus of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. Currently, the hospital serves adult patients with medically complex hospital needs of 25 days or more such as acute and chronic renal failure, prolonged respiratory assistance and wound management requiring complex intervention. This is done with a multidisciplinary team approach working closely with patients and families to achieve optimal outcomes.

EDUCATION
— UT SOUTHWESTERN MEDICAL CENTER

As one of the premier academic medical centers in the nation, UT Southwestern trains the physicians, medical scientists and health-care professionals of the future. With about 230 medical school students admitted each year, admission to UT Southwestern is highly competitive. Medical students learn to become highly skilled practitioners. Researchers are trained to lead the way in developing the latest in biomedical science. Students from the health professions programs go on to become integral members of our nation's health-care delivery and education system.

UT Southwestern's physicians are equipped to bring the latest laboratory findings to each patient and provide inpatient care to nearly 97,000 people and oversee approximately 1.8 million outpatient visits annually. Physicians provide care to patients at UT Southwestern University Hospitals, Parkland Health & Hospital System, Children's Medical Center Dallas and the VA North Texas Health Care System, as well as the Aston Building, the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, and other affiliated hospitals and clinics in North Texas.

SENIORS
Dallas county estimated 202,092 adults age 65 years of age and older within its boundaries in 2008 according the U.S. Census. With aging of the Baby Boomers and the influx of millions of new households in the next few decades, this group is expected to grow dramatically, making factors affecting seniors all that more important. By 2030, national projections estimate that the population of those 65 years of age and older will make up almost 20 percent of the general population.

The good news is that paying for senior related health cost in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex will get you more here then in other states. According to Genworth's 2010 Cost of Care Survey, home care costs, as well as costs of other long term care services, are lower in Texas than they are nationally

As a result of national and local aging trends, increased attention is being paid to the 60 years of age and older population. Examples include Dallas Area Agency on Aging (DAAA), Dallas’ senior advocacy group. The mission of the DAAA is to serve as the focal point and advocate on behalf of persons 60 years of age and older who reside in Dallas County by planning, developing and coordinating services that ensure a system that positively impacts their health, honor and dignity.

Dallas County Health & Human Services operate the Older Adult Service Program which includes 10 senior centers that provide free meals, activities and programs for Dallas County residents over the age of 60.

SELECTING A PHYSICIAN
Once you’re settled in to your new community, it’s important that you select a doctor for you and your family. Here are a few ideas and suggestions to begin the process:
  • Consult your company’s health plan and its list of preferred providers who will accept the company’s insurance.
  • Ask family, friends, neighbors, co-workers or professionals with whom you’re in contact. Find out what they like best and least about their doctors.
  • Use hospital physician referral services, but keep in mind the services refer you to any of the doctors on staff but do not offer information on the quality of care these doctors provide.
  • Check the “DoctorFinder” service of the American Medical Association at www.ama-assn.org. DoctorFinder provides you with basic professional information on virtually every licensed physician in the United States, which includes more than 814,000 doctors. You can search by doctor name, location or specialty.
  • Be sure the doctor is board–certified. All U.S. board-certified physicians are listed with the American Board of Medical Specialties (www.abms.org) or call (866) 275-2267. The American Medical Association provides information about U.S. licensed physicians at www.ama-assn.org.

Other online resources, including www.healthgrades.com or www.doctordirectory.com provide search by name, specialty and location.
