PUBLIC HEALTH
— PARKLAND HEALTH AND HOSPITAL SYSTEM

Parkland is redefining public health care. Time has changed technology, leading causes of disease and death, emergency transportation and the outward appearance of the facility; however, the health and hospital system’s mission for the future is based on the same promise it was founded upon—the pledge of medical care to all in need. Parkland serves as the primary teaching hospital for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. More than 60 percent of the doctors in the Dallas area have undergone formal training at Parkland. The hospital system boasts 10 Centers of Excellence with the most skilled health professionals and state-of-the-art tools and equipment:Trauma; Burns; Spinal Cord Injuries; Cancer; Endocrinology; Women & Infants; Epilepsy; Gastroenterology; Cardiology; and Orthopedics. A new health care campus is currently being built to replace the current hospital which opened in 1954 when patient volumes and the Dallas County population were much smaller. The new facilities will encompass 1.68 million square feet of space and includes: 862-bed adult inpatient hospital; outpatient clinic building; office building; and parking. The total size of the project will be $1.2 billion. In order to reduce the burden on taxpayers, the financing plan includes not only bond proceeds but also cash reserves from Parkland and philanthropic dollars raised by the Parkland Foundation.
